Curbside Service Changes Starting July 2

Photo of a Garden City Sanitation truck, which begins collecting garbage for some neighborhoods in San Jose starting July 2.

Curbside Service Changes

Q. What is changing about curbside garbage and recycling services?

A. Starting July 2, a new team of haulers — Garden City Sanitation, California Waste Solutions, and GreenWaste Recovery — will provide garbage, recycling, yard trimmings, and street sweeping services in most San José neighborhoods. GreenTeam customers have no service changes.

Garden City Sanitation, will use white trucks for collecting garbage. California Waste Solutions will use gray trucks for collecting recyclables. GreenWaste Recovery will collect yard trimmings and sweep streets throughout San José.

Collection may take place any time from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., so please leave your carts out until they are collected.

Q. Are the changes Citywide?

A. No. If you are currently served by GreenTeam and Green Waste Recovery, there are no changes to your curbside service. If you live in an apartment or condominium complex with dumpster collection you are not affected by the service changes.

View the map showing which neighborhoods are affected.

Q. Will my garbage and recycling collection day change?

A. No. All collection days and street sweeping days remain the same.

Q. Will the time of collection remain the same?

A. No. Two separate trucks will collect garbage and recycling — a white truck for garbage and a gray truck for recyclables. They will come to your neighborhood at different times. Collection hours for garbage, recyclables, and yard trimmings are anytime from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Q. Will there be any changes in the yard trimmings program?

A. GreenWaste Recovery will collect yard trimmings throughout the City, including areas that were served by Norcal. Continue to set out your yard trimmings for collection by 6 a.m. on the same day as your garbage and recycling.

Missed Collection

Q. What do I do if one of my carts was not emptied?

A. Some services may be delayed during the month of July, as drivers learn their new routes. Leave your carts out until they are emptied. This may be as late as 6 p.m. on the day AFTER your collection day (including Saturdays). Route supervisors and City staff will be driving the routes daily to double-check for any missed collections. If your cart is the only one missed on the street, call your new hauler directly.

Q. How long should I wait before I report a missed pick-up?

A. Wait until the end of the day after your collection day. Route supervisors and City staff will be driving the routes daily to double-check for any missed collections. However, if your cart(s) are the only ones missed on your street, call the appropriate hauler directly.

Carts

Q. Do we use the same garbage and recycling carts?

A. Yes. Continue to set your carts out on your scheduled collection day by 6 a.m.

Q. My garbage/recyling cart is cracked/damaged. What should I do?

A. Contact your hauler directly for a replacement.

Q. Can I change the size of my garbage cart for free?

A. Residents are allowed one free exchange each year (July 1 through June 30). You should be careful in selecting the appropriate size of garbage cart since overflowing carts will not be collected. For occasional extra garbage, “Extra Garbage” stickers can be purchased at all City libraries or Safeway stores in San José.

Setouts

Q. Why do we need to leave so much space between carts and yard trimmings piles?

A. A safe, clean, and efficient collection depends on your curbside setout.Leaving 2 feet between carts and 5 feet from yard trimmings piles gives the automatic truck arms adequate space to maneuver.

Q. What should I do if I have more recyclables than will fit into my cart?

A. The City encourages curbside recycling. You may place extra recyclables out in paper bags next to your recycling cart.

Q. Are there any changes in large item collection?

A. No. The cost for collecting three large items remains $25. Call your recycling hauler to schedule a collection appointment.

Q. How can I get copies of the Recycling Guide?

A. The Recycling Guide is available in English, Spanish and Vietnamese.

Q. Can I still recycle my motor oil at the curbside, or do I need to go through the County Household Hazardous Waste program?

A. Residents who live in single-family homes will continue to receive curbside collection of used motor oil and filters. Place your City-issued jugs and bags on the curb for collection. Drivers will leave up to 4 replacements. Call your recycling hauler if you need used motor oil jugs or oil filter bags.

You can also contact the Santa Clara County Household Hazardous Waste Program at (408) 299-7300 to schedule a free appointment to drop-off used motor oil and filters, as well as other household hazardous products such as chemicals, syringes, and propane tanks.

Household Hazardous Waste

New Trucks

Q. What are the environmental impacts of having two separate trucks collect garbage and recyclables instead of a split-body truck?

A. The same number of trucks will be collecting garbage and recyclables in the City. Each of the new garbage and recycling trucks is able to fill up with more materials. That means the new trucks make fewer trips back and forth to the landfill or to the materials recovery facility. Also, the new trucks are more fuel-efficient than the older ones so they produce fewer emissions.

Q. What should I do if I see a truck in my neighborhood before 6 am?

A. Contact the hauler directly. The company logo appears on the side or door of the collection truck.
