Recycling Hotline (408) 924-5453 or 1 (800) 533-8414 or www.recyclestuff.org

For information about recycling unusual materials not mentioned below.

plastic bags

Plastic Bags

Plastic bags are no longer accepted in your home recycling cart. They are expensive to recycle, require a tremendous amount of energy to produce, and are common litter items that threaten wildlife and pollute our creeks and the Bay. Return plastic bags to your local grocery store for recycling.

chemicals

Household Hazardous Waste

You can schedule a free disposal appointment for hazardous materials such as batteries, cleaning fluids, fluorescent bulbs, paint, pesticides and fertilizers, pool chemicals, solvents, medical waste, and mercury thermometers. Call the Santa Clara County Household Hazardous Waste Program at 299-7300.

Or find local drop off collection locations for the following common household hazardous wastes:

You can also check our events calendar periodically for household hazardous waste, electronic waste, expired medicine or mercury thermometer recycling events.

computer and television

Electronics

See Santa Clara County's Recycling Guide for CRTs and Electronics (PDF format, 39 KB) for a current list of electronics recyclers for each city in Santa Clara County.

Find more resources for recycling Universal Wastes, including cell phones, digital cameras and stereos.

The Environmental Protection Agency is working through its Plug-In To eCycling program to promote the environmental benefits of recycling and provide the public with information on safely reusing and recycling obsolete electronics products, including computers, cell phones, and televisions. For more information, see The Digital Television Transition: No Need to Trash Your TV.

large items

Large Item Collection

You can have "bulky" items, such as mattresses, sofas, refrigerators, or tires, picked up at your curb for a small fee. To schedule a pick-up appointment, contact your recycling hauler. Not sure who your recycling hauler is? San José’s new online Collection Day Look-up now provides a convenient way to find your garbage, recycling, and yard trimmings collection day, street sweeping schedule, and service provider contact information.

Residents of apartments and condos should contact their property managers to arrange a large item pick-up.

Construction Debris

The City of San José has a Construction & Demolition Diversion Deposit (CDDD) Program to ensure that construction and demolition materials, for sites that have been issued a building permit, can be recovered or reused instead of ending up in a landfill. For more information about CDDD, visit Construction and Demolition Recycling. This web site also lists CDDD-certified facilities that will recover or recycle construction materials.

Check our web site listing of City of San José Franchised Solid Waste Haulers for information on debris box rentals.

holiday tree

Holiday Tree

Recycle your holiday tree from December 26, 2011 – February 3, 2012.

Natural and flocked holiday trees will be collected for recycling on the same day as your garbage, recycling and yard trimmings. You don't need to attach an "Extra Garbage" sticker, but you do need to remove tinsel, decorations and the tree stand. Trees should then be cut into five-foot lengths and placed in the street 1 foot from the curb and 5 feet from your garbage and recycling carts and parked vehicles.

If you live in an apartment, townhouse or condo, ask your property manager if special arrangements have been made for recycling holiday trees on-site.
