Curb Setout Guidelines

Carts
Place carts side-by-side in the street, 2 feet apart and with wheels against the curb. Keep all carts five feet from anything that may block the collection truck, including yard trimming piles and parked cars. Do not overfill recycling garbage of yard trimming carts. Lids must be completely closed. If you fill your yard trimmings cart, place extra yard trimmings loose in the street. Contents of the cart cannot exceed 60 lbs.

Keep all carts 5 feet away from anything that may block the collection truck, including yard trimmings piles, parked cars and basketball hoops.

Keep track of your cart. Write your recycling cart serial number on your copy of the Recycling Guide. If your cart is lost, stolen or damaged, call 535-3500. First-time replacement is free.

Loose in the Street Yard Trimming Piles
Loose in the street yard trimming piles should be no more than five feet by five feet, one foot out from the curb, and at least five feet from other piles, carts or parked cars.

Used Motor Oil & Filters
Oil Filter Bag and Oil jug, extra recyclables, and extra garbage in bags should go on the curb behind or next to carts and piles. The truck driver will leave empty replacements.

Extra Recyclables
Place extra recyclables in paper bags on the curb near the recycling cart.

Extra Cardboard
Flatten and cut cardboard so it fits loosely inside your cart. If you have more cardboard than your cart will hold, flatten and cit it into pieces no larger than 4 feet by 4 feet and lean them against the cart.

Extra Garbage
Place extra garbage in a 32-gallon plastic garbage bag labeled with an extra garbage sticker on the curb near the garbage cart. You may buy extra garbage stickers at all San José libraries and Safeway stores in San José. A portion of the sales from stickers sold at San José libraries supports library programs.

More Setout Tips

Bundle It
Even a slight breeze can send loose items swirling around your street. Reuse plastic grocery bags to contain material prone to scattering such as shredded office paper, packing peanuts, and plastic bags.

Close the Lid
Remember: do not overfill your recycling or garbage cart. If the lid is not completely closed during collection, material can spill out and create a mess. Your material may not be collected if the driver cannot empty the cart without spilling the contents.

Tie Bags Securely
Tie bags of extra garbage securely and do not overfill paper bags containing extra recyclables. Place all of these bags on the curb near the carts to prevent them from being accidentally spilled or torn open.

When To Set Out Garbage and Recyclables

Carts
Set out all carts no later than 6 a.m. on your collection day, and no earlier than the day before.

Yard Trimmings
Set out yard trimmings no later than 6 a.m. on your collection day, and no earlier than the day before. You will be notified of alternate collection methods if loose collection is not possible on your street (because of bike lanes, red curbs, etc.).

Hours of Operation

Weekly Collection
Collection for all material occurs between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., Monday-Friday, once per week. A collection schedule magnet is mailed to residents of single-family homes each year in the fall. If you need a replacement or have questions about your collection and street sweeping days, call Customer Service at 535-3500.

Holiday Collection

Collection occurs on all holidays EXCEPT Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years Day. If these holidays occur Monday through Friday, collection will be one day later throughout the rest of that week. For example, if the holiday falls on a Thursday, Thursday collection occurs Friday and Friday collection occurs Saturday.

Apartments & Condos

Never put garbage in the recycling container. All household garbage goes in the garbage dumpster. This way recyclables are not contaminated by garbage.

Always flatten cardboard boxes before placing them in the recycling cart or bin. This helps make room for more recyclables.

Collection for all material occurs weekly between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Frequency of collection varies by complex; contact your property manager for details.
