Curbside Courier: Fall 2005

Computer monitor, keyboard and mouseHoliday deals for new plasma and LCD screens may be tempting you to update your electronic equipment. But before you rush to buy, consider what happens to the items you have now. After February 2006, it will be illegal to put these items in either your recycling or garbage cart; and until then, it’s just not right to do so.

State legislators have identified TVs, computer monitors, fluorescent bulbs, and other electronic items as “Universal Waste” because they contain lead and mercury. If these electronics end up in our landfills they can contaminate the soil and groundwater with toxic chemicals. Refer to the chart below to see which items must be kept out of your garbage and recycling carts. Your carts will not be collected if these items are found inside.

Luckily, there are plenty of good alternatives:

  • If your electronic items still work, find a way to reuse them. Can you give your computer to a local school?
  • Take advantage of City and County collection programs. See chart below for details.
  • Search for a recycler for everything from electronics to construction debris by visiting http://www.recyclestuff.org/ or calling Recycling Hotline at 800-533-8414 or (408) 924-5453.
  • For the latest information on electronic and Universal Waste, visit the Santa Clara County website at http://www.hhw.org/.
