Welcome to Urban Compost

Urban Compost logoSan José has actively supported the production and use of compost since 1993. Healthy compost markets help private contractors improve their cost structure which helps San José negotiate lower costs for yard waste hauling. A strong compost market not only helps the City save money, but helps the environment by preserving soil nutrients and reducing greenhouse gases. Composting plays a key role in efforts to divert organics from landfills.

This site serves as a clearing house for information sponsored and compiled by San José. It offers tools such as field research, case studies, compost specifications, city policy samples, and documents easily adapted for other agencies and jurisdictions.

The Bay-Friendly Gardening and Landscaping Coalition is showcasing the 2012 Bay-Friendly Garden Tour to Santa Clara County. This self-guided tour of residential, educational, and private gardens in San José demonstrates gardening techniques and templates that are attractive and sustainable in the Bay Area. The tour features gardens maintained by native plant enthusiasts, wildlife gardeners, elementary school students and teachers, and urban food growers who are happy to show you their work, discuss their accomplishments, and explain their challenges. Highlights include backyard orchards, kitchen gardens, live chickens and fish, as well as drought-tolerant replacements for water-thirsty lawns. Gardens range from professionally designed postage-stamp-sized lots to exuberant one-acre do-it-yourself gardens. In addition, the tour includes discussions about rainwater collection, grey-water management, and opportunities to attend noontime talks on sustainable landscaping techniques and principles.

Registration for the tour is required. Register online by April 29, 2012. Registrants will be mailed a tour guidebook with directions and garden descriptions. For more information, email
