Where to Buy Compost

Finished compost is produced in Santa Clara County at the Newby Island Compost Facility by BFI-Allied Waste, and at the Z-best Composting Facility by Zanker Road Resource Management. To acquire compost from these local producers, please visit their websites listed below.

Zanker Road Resource Management began their composting operations in 1989 to process yard trimmings from San José’s curbside collection program. As the need expanded, Zanker opened their 157 acre Z-Best composting facility in Gilroy in 1998. The site was re-permitted for additional tonnage and the acceptance of food wastes in 2000. The site currently composts 800 tons per day of yard trimmings and over 300 tons per day of mixed organic wastes from commercial and multi-family sectors in San José.  Last year, Z-Best sold over 130,000 tons of OMRI certified organic compost.

Newby Island Composting Facility is located on the premise of Newby Island Sanitary Landfill. Operated by BFI-Allied Waste, we collect and process 3,000 cubic yards/day of yard trimmings and wood wastes from Bay Area cities into quality soil amendments. Compost and colored mulch are some of the products sold wholesale to large landscapers and material yards.
