Environmentally and socially friendly fundraising organizations provide an alternative to traditional school fundraising that may not be consistent with stewardship values.

Go Green Mini-grants promote environmental stewardship in San José K-12 public and private schools. They foster on-campus recycling and composting programs and other sustainable environmental programs. Grants are intended for projects that work directly with and benefit K-12 students. Examples of past projects include paper recycling programs, school gardens, field trips to connect children with nature, environmental education materials, and teacher trainings. Teachers, principals, environmental or science club advisors, student environmental or other leadership clubs or groups, custodians, parents and PTAs and PTOs of San José K-12 schools, public or private, are eligible and encouraged to apply. Grants range from $500 to $5,000.

Youth Watershed Education Grants are designed to promote understanding and stewardship of the Santa Clara Basin Watershed among South Bay youth in grades K-12. Grant projects include youth education, curriculum development, adoption and implementation of published watershed-based curricula, and teacher/youth leader training. Eligible applicants/project managers should be educators or youth leaders affiliated with a school or a charitable, nonprofit, nonsectarian organization serving grades K-12 within the cities of San José, Santa Clara, Milpitas, Cupertino, Campbell, Los Gatos, Saratoga, or Monte Sereno. Grants range from $500 through $5,000.

San José public and private non-sectarian schools and community groups can apply for beautification grants ranging from $500-$3,500. Funding is to be matched by volunteer efforts and/or matching cash donations. Projects must be within the city limits of San José. Funding is available for projects which include:

  • Theme, cultural or educational gardens
  • Plants and materials to support the plants
  • Life Lab projects that teach science, nutrition and horticulture
