Zero Waste – Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Commercial Redesign Process? This process is the first step in evaluating what the City will need to do in order to achieve the City's Green Vision and goals of 75% recycling by 2013 and zero waste to landfill by 2022. The commercial sector will play a key role in this effort as it generates a majority of all garbage generated in San Jose, and there is significant opportunity for additional recycling.

What are businesses currently doing regarding their recycling? There are some businesses that have robust recycling programs and others that are struggling to start one. The City is trying to get a better understanding of how all businesses view recycling and the challenges/opportunities that exist.

What is the goal of the Commercial Redesign Process? The goal of the redesign process is to develop a program that meets the garbage and recycling service needs of the business community while also helping the City achieve its environmental goals.

Who should fill out the online survey? Any San Jose business that is receiving garbage and/or recycling services

Is there a way to fill out a hard-copy of the survey? Yes. Please call Michael Foster at 975-2601 or email at zerowaste@sanjoseca.gov, and request that a hard copy be mailed to you

Is the survey available in other languages? Yes. Please request materials at zerowaste@sanjoseca.gov, or call 975-2601.

What is the timeline for this process? The timeline for soliciting feedback from the business community is February 8, 2008 – March 28, 2008.

What impact will these changes have on my business? At this point in time, the City does not anticipate any changes and is only collecting information so that additional analysis can take place. Staff will be presenting the results of the survey to the City Council Transportation and Environment Committee in June 2008.

What impact will these changes have on residential service? The City's residential collection contracts have been negotiated through 2013, so at this point in time, the City does not anticipate any impacts on the residential program.

What is roll-off service and what is front-end service? Roll-off service is typically provided in large 20-40 cubic yard dumpsters that "roll-off" the back of a large truck. This type of service is typically used by contractors at construction sites or businesses that are going through a large clean out of inventory. Front-end service is typically provided in 1-6 cubic yard bins. These bins are lifted up over the front end of the garbage truck and emptied into the hopper at the top of the collection vehicle. This type of service is common for 90% of weekly collection activities.

How can I find out the results of the survey? Please email zerowaste@sanjoseca.gov and request that a copy of the results be emailed to you.
