Improving Business Recycling

Downtown setouts San José is looking for ways to improve recycling services for businesses. Currently San José has achieved a 62% recycling rate, but the business sector is far behind the residential sector and is estimated to be recycling only about 10% of what could be achieved. Recently, Council adopted a new Zero Waste Policy which sets an overall goal of 75% diversion by 2013 and 100% recycling by 2022 (Zero Waste). Finding ways to increase business recycling will be a critical part of achieving the City’s new and ambitious goals.

Watch the Zero Waste video introducing San José's Green Vision Goal # 5 and how the City is working with the business community, event organizers and large city facilities such as the airport and convention center to divert 100% of waste from our landfill.

Business Recycling Survey Results

Between the period of February 8, through April 17, all businesses in San José, both small and large, were invited to provide input through an online survey.  Over 500 members of the business community responded with information about current recycling practices, barriers and preferences for ways to increase recycling. View the Business Recycling Survey Results (PDF, 357 KB).

This data, as well as ongoing research on best practices, options and continued input from businesses will help with the development of recommendations for recycling improvements. Updates on this process, including the results of the survey will be presented to the Transportation and Environment Committee (T&E).
