Reusable Bags – Tentative Timeline

Proposal presented to T&E. Staff were directed to describe all options for reducing single-use plastic and paper bags.

April 2009

Staff report scheduled to T&E, but item deferred to August Community and Economic Development (CED) Committe.

August 24, 2009

CED recommends a ban on both plastic and paper single-use carryout bags.  See Resources section for link to memo.

September 22, 2009

Council votes in favor of CED recommendation with amendments. See Resources section for link.

Fall/Winter 2009

Continue outreach to stakeholders, ethnic Chambers of Commerce and small businesses. CEQA public scoping meeting to be held.

Early 2010

Draft EIR anticipated, Council to consider ordinance language.

January 2011

Ordinance implementation.
